Garry Bjorklund 2014 Race Plan

It’s race week friends!!! I definitely didn’t train as much as I thought I would, but that time has passed. My plan for this year is to enjoy the course. As a review, this is the half marathon of Grandma’s Marathon weekend.

Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon 2012This course was my first half back in 2012, recap here. And I completed the FULL MARATHON last year, recap here.

I’m hoping my PR setting race from April will be a decent indicator of what I’m able to accomplish 2 months later. My workouts haven’t been quite as intense, but I have familiarity of the course and crowd support on my side.

Initially I was bummed that I didn’t have a race supporter to travel with me, but thankfully I have many friends running, so hopefully it will all work out and I’ll join them for fun! Here’s a little time line for you if you want to meet up with me!

Friday afternoon: Drive to Duluth, check in to the dorms, go to packet pickup, get dinner.

Saturday: 4:15 am, alarm set. I tweeted at the college and they assured me there would be coffee available for purchase at this ungodly hour.

Ready to Go at the Hotel6:15 am: Race Starts! I plan on starting with the 2:15 pace group, and allowing the 2:30 to push me forward if I need them (which I probably will). I finished Run for the Lakes with a solid finishing sprint, but there was some wasted time in the middle, if I really left it all on the course, i could get another PR.

Fuel: Coffee and Bagel in the morning, water to sip on the bus, honey stinger waffle since 4:15 and 6:15 are two hours apart. Gu for miles 4, 7, and 10.

Nathan Handheld and GuWater: I haven’t decided if I’ll carry my handheld water bottle. I will probably bring it with me, and throw it in my gear check bag if the weather seems cool enough that I can rely on the water stations. With my lack of training, if it is hot/sunny I will carry it with so I can drink whenever I like.

8:45 am-ish: Finish? This is providing the race starts on time and if I decide to enjoy the run, I might be slower than my first appearance in 2012.

9 am – 1 pm: Eat and Spectate: I would love to get some food from Northern Waters Smokehaus, or Pizza Luce, while watching the marathoners come in. Eventually I’ll need a shower and a nap.

4 pm-6 pm: I’d love to go to Black Water to hit up their happy hour. Its one of my favorite spots, but can get spendy, so a deal is always appreciated.

Tents: last year I went to the Tents in the evening and thought it was a waste of time/money. There is a small chance I will decide to go home on Saturday night once I’ve had my fill of Duluth. It depends on how I’m feeling and what friends I’m able to connect with.

Will you be traveling to Duluth? Are you race plans focused on the run, or the fun?

  1. I was planning on heading up that way with Dave, but he is working that weekend now and my friends from NE aren’t running it like I thought they were. 🙁 Plus now there is a Minnesota blogger get together all day…sad you will miss that but GOOD LUCK!! 🙂

  2. Hi Katie! Good luck on the half! I’m running the full, so maybe I’ll see you cheering 🙂
Lucky for me, I get to sleep in a bit later than your 4:15 since the marathon doesn’t start til 7:45.
